The Sport For A Lifetime

You have heard tennis called “The Sport For A Lifetime.” No one could embody that expression more for me than Mr. Robert “Bob” Lawrence. Bob is the father of one of my friends and co-workers, Mrs. Judi Licata. Mr. Lawrence passed away in July at age 96. Bob played tennis on the “Senior Senior” tennis tour until he was 93, when his vision and some health issues forced him to retire. He traveled the world playing tennis and enjoying the company of good friends and players. He and his doubles partner (who was 2 years older) had several national titles as seniors. However, what you really need to know is that Bob started playing tennis when he was 75. Most of us hope we can still play when we are 75, but that’s when Bob first got hooked. Material Science In Tennis

Gels, materials with “memory”, materials that use nanotechnology, or wick away wetness - what are they, how do they work and what impact can they have on your game?

Material science is one of the largest areas of innovation in sports engineering and technology today and not just in tennis, but also across the board in most sports. Each sport is unique, based in part by the sport’s governing rules on equipment design and performance. Read the rest of this entry »

Nadal, Federer Australian Open Postscript

Posted on Feb 07, 2009 under Tennis news | No Comment

So just who is the better player, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer? Well, I think the answer is crystal clear. Right now it’s Nadal. After winning the Australian Open the Spaniard has amassed Slams on hardcourt, grass and on clay to go along with two Davis Cup titles and an Olympic Gold. And he’s done it all by the age of 23. Wow.

Would you rather have Federer’s resume or Rafa’s with the possibility the Spaniard’s best may still be yet to come? It’s debatable now. Read the rest of this entry »

Although financial services companies and automakers ~ among tennis’ prime sponsors ~ have been hit hard, replacements have been surprisingly easy to…

After nearly a lifetime dedicated to playing, coaching, and teaching tennis, Avis Murray can still remember playing her first serious match. The setting was a mixed doubles match at Bass Rocks Golf Club in Gloucester, and she had the scent of a rookie all over her. “I would walk out with one racquet,” she said. “No cover.” Before the match, she peeked at the other side of the net, and this “guy had this long…
